The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has discovered via their research that the overuse of medications has led to an increase in the resistance of disease-causing microorganisms to antibiotics. Future diseases brought on by drug-resistant bacteria will be very challenging for doctors to cure, making this a highly perilous situation.
According to the ICMR report, a significant fraction of patients have developed what is known as antimicrobial resistance and are now unable to be treated with the potent antibiotic carbapenem, which is used to treat septicemia and pneumonia.
mipenem resistance, which is used to treat E. coli infections, rose from 14% in 2016 to 36% in 2021. The antibiotic susceptibility of Klebsiella pneumoniae decreased from 65% in 2016 to 43% in 2021.
For infections brought on by the Acinetobacter baumannii bacterium, 87.5 percent of the patients tested positive for resistance to the broad-spectrum antibiotic carbapenem. Similar bacteria are almost 50% susceptible to minocycline.
