The youth who died recently in Thrissur on Saturday had monkeypox, the Kerala health authority announced on Monday. The samples were transferred to NIV Pune, and on Monday, positive results were obtained. This is the first confirmed monkeypox death in India and almost certainly the fourth outside of Africa. There have been a total of five cases of the disease reported in the nation.
The 22-year-old man tested positive for monkeypox in the UAE before arriving in Kerala on July 22, according to state Health Minister Veena George, who made the revelation on Sunday. The man had monkeypox, according to George, but his family hadn’t notified the hospital in Thrissur until only last Saturday.
Hafeez, 22, died on Sunday, and it is suspected that he died of monkeypox. After his arrival at the Kozhikode airport, the health authorities quickly sprung into action and began compiling a thorough contact list of him. Four of his friends as well as his family members were discovered to be waiting for him at the airport.
The following day, he and his mates were out playing football. He fell on July 27 and was transported to a nearby clinic; from there, he was sent to a hospital, where he was receiving treatment; he passed away on Sunday. Contact tracing is underway as reported.
Monkeypox has most recently been deemed an international public health emergency by the World Health Organization (WHO). More than 16,000 cases of monkeypox have been reported from 75 different countries worldwide.
The Union Health Ministry has launched a variety of programmes, including the promotion of health screening at Points of Entry and the operationalization of 15 laboratories within the ICMR to conduct monkeypox disease testing.
