The unemployment rate fell by 0.6 percent between 2019-20 and 2020-21, from 4.8 percent to 4.2 percent, according to data from the Statistics and Programme Implementation Ministry’s Periodic Labour Force Survey, the Centre told Parliament on Monday (PLFS).
Despite the fact that this time saw two waves of the pandemic, which left millions of employees without work and resulted in the suspension of field activity, according to the ministry of statistics and programme implementation’s PLFS force survey.
“The PLFS numbers demonstrate that the unemployment rate is decreasing in rural areas as well as across India,” said Rameswar Teli, minister of state for labour and unemployment.
According to the government, the national unemployment rate fell to 4.2 percent in 2020-21, down from 5.8 percent in 2018-19, and to 3.3 percent in rural areas, down from 5 percent in the same period.
According to the report, Sikkim (71.3 percent) had the highest Worker Population Ratio in 2020-21, followed by Himachal Pradesh (69.5 percent) and Chhattisgarh (63.6 percent), while Bihar had the lowest (39.9 percent), Lakshadweep 40.1 percent, and Manipur 41 percent. Teli stated that the government prioritised job creation as well as boosting employability through programmes such as Aatmanirbhar Bharat and the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.
