India surpassed 20k new Covid cases; Free booster dose for 75 days

With 20,139 new infections, India’s daily Covid dally has surpassed 20,000 for the first time since February. The increase comes as the government plans to provide free third-dose or booster shots beginning Friday.

As part of its Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations, the Centre announced on Wednesday that it will provide free Covid-19 vaccination booster doses to all adults at government-run centres beginning Friday for 75 days.

On June 1, the government launched the second phase of the ‘Har Ghar Dastak campaign 2.0’ across states to speed up immunisation and encourage booster doses. The two-month programme is now in progress.

According to government figures, 96% of India’s population has received the first dose of the Covid vaccination, with 87% having received both doses.
