In the fifth round of the Chessable Masters online rapid chess tournament on Friday, India’s 16-year-old Grandmaster Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu startled World Champion Magnus Carlsen for the second match in only three months.
The tournament’s fifth round match was heading for a draw when world champion Magnus Carlsen made a one-move error that cost him the match. Despite winning, the 16-year-old GM was dissatisfied.
With this victory, the Indian GM is now in sixth place on the scoreboard. At the completion of Day 2 of the tournament, Carlsen sits in third place with 12 points, while China’s Wei Yi is in first place with 18 points.
In February of this year, young Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa beat World No.1 Magnus Carlsen during the Airthings Masters, an online rapid chess tournament. Praggnanandhaa stopped Carlsen’s three-game winning streak by winning with black pieces in 39 moves in a Tarrasch variation game. With eight points after eight rounds, the Indian GM occupies joint 12th place. A solitary victory over Lev Aronian, two draws, and four losses during the earlier rounds preceded his magnificent victory over Carlsen earlier this year.
