Almost 40 people were rescued today in a daring operation involving two Air Force helicopters and scores of officials who had been caught in mid-air in cable cars connecting the Trikut Hills in Jharkhand’s Deoghar district for over 40 hours.
Combined teams of the Indian Air Force, Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, and National Disaster Response Force carried with the rescue operations, according to Deoghar Deputy Commissioner Manjunath Bhajantri (NDRF).
Two cable cars collided on the ropeway at Trikut Hills near Baba Baidyanath Temple on Sunday afternoon after a technical problem on the ropeway caused them to collide.
Last night, a person fell from a helicopter while being rescued, bringing the total number of people killed in the disaster to three. The man was seen clinging to a rope suspended from the chopper for several moments before suddenly losing his grip and falling, sending bystanders into a frenzy.
The Deoghar ropeway incident has been seized suo motu by the Jharkhand High Court, which has ordered an investigation. On April 26, the court will hear the case.
