An IIT Bombay student committed suicide by jumping from the 7th floor of a building.

A postgraduate student of IIT Bombay in Powai has committed suicide by jumping off the 7th-floor terrace of his hostel, officials said here on Monday.

It is believed that Darshan Malviya, a resident of Madhya Pradesh, had been battling depression for a long and was receiving treatment for it.

Apparently writing a suicide note on a board in his hostel room, he declared no one should be held responsible for what he did before jumping off the terrace around 4.30 a.m.

Immediately upon hearing the loud bang, a student security officer ran to investigate and found Malviya lying in a pool of blood. The officer alerted the hostel authorities and the co-students.

After rushing him to the government-run Rajawadi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, they informed the Powai Police, who filed an accidental death report.

Initial investigations indicate Malviya suffered from depression before obtaining admission to IIT-B in the middle of 2021 and had been treated by in-house and external doctors and experts.

In some people, untreated depression can lead to suicidal thoughts or attempts and can be fatal. Everyone has good and bad days. But some people have more bad days than good days. Depression is a serious mental health condition that can become deadly if it isn’t treated.
