Shanbor Shullai, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s leader in Meghalaya, declared on Thursday that his party will continue to back the National People’s Party. The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance, led by Conrad Sangma and currently in charge of the Northeast Indian state of Meghalaya, has the NPP as its largest member. The political landscape in Meghalaya is expected to change in the coming days as the state prepares to hold its Assembly elections in March 2023.
M. Chuba Ao of the BJP announced at the beginning of last month that the party would leave the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance in a month. The BJP is one of the smaller parties in the six-party coalition headed by the NPP, having only two delegates. The cause was cited as the corruption allegations against numerous members of the ruling party. The CBI was reportedly looking into the allegations, and a decision would be taken after all the facts were clear.
Currently, the coalition will continue until the next legislative assembly elections in the state, mentioned the state minister. As for the future of the friendly coalition, it will be decided by the BJP’s central command.
