Meeting of the Meghalaya BJP is scheduled for today to discuss worker harassment
The Meghalaya state BJP has summoned a meeting for Wednesday to discuss the issue after learning of complaints of harassment of party leaders and supporters in Tura. The gathering is also likely to address the police action against party vice-president Bernard Marak and his subsequent Tuesday arrest while travelling across Uttar Pradesh.
On Tuesday, Ernest Mawrie, the state president of the BJP, denounced the “political vendetta” against party members and urged the police to cease harassing and detaining them without a warrant. The party’s central leadership has been informed of the recent developments in Meghalaya, according to Mawrie, who urged party members to maintain their composure and exercise restraint in the face of any police action.
Prestone Tynsong, the deputy chief minister, had said on Monday that Marak’s accusations would not be dropped.
“Just because the accused is a BJP vice president, we cannot drop the allegations. Everyone is subject to the same laws, he had previously told reporters.
He asserted that the law will be followed regardless of whether the BJP leadership put pressure on him to drop the charges.
