Since the police stormed his 30-room farmhouse on July 22 in the evening and busted a sex racket, Bernard R. Marak, vice-president of the BJP’s Meghalaya branch, has eluded capture. He was today apprehended in Hapur, Uttar Pradesh. After the Police Department thoroughly searched the area surrounding Marak’s farm house following the raid, which was associated with unlawful operations, Marak was apprehended.
The Meghalaya police have stepped up their search for a State BJP leader who is suspected of converting his farmhouse on the outskirts of Tura town into a brothel.
Following a police raid at the farmhouse in Tura in the state’s West Garo Hills area, from which six youngsters were rescued and 73 others were arrested on Saturday, Marak, a former militant leader, has been on escape.
“Bernard N. Marak, also known as Rimpu, has been taken into custody in Uttar Pradesh.” District Superintendent of Police Vivekanand Singh told PTI that a team is being dispatched there to bring him to Tura.
After the authorities in Meghalaya issued a look out notice against him, the BJP leader was detained by the UP police in the Hapur district, Singh claimed.
In addition to apprehending 73 young people, both male and female, many of them in “compromising positions,” and six minors, the police also seized 500 packets of unopened birth control, 168 litres of alcohol, and other materials that they claimed showed the location was being used as a brothel.
A court in Tura had on Monday issued a non-bailable warrant of arrest against the BJP leader.
However, Bernard has been evading capture ever since the Meghalaya police launched the raid, alleging that his detention was the result of a political plot.
He reportedly was detained today in Uttar Pradesh after a thorough search operation.
