Now, Meghalaya Legislative Assembly members will have the option of holding in-house discussions in Khasi and Garo.
Prestone Tynsong, the deputy chief minister, announced on Monday that the system for allowing members to engage in Assembly proceedings in Khasi and Garo languages will be put into place during the Budget session of the following year.
In a speech to the audience following the unveiling of the book Ka Lapalang Ha Ri War by Dr. Bashida Massar at St. Anthony’s College , Tynsong explained that they would not be able to implement the new system during the autumn session in September because they would need to hire interpreters and set up the necessary equipment in the Assembly hall.
“This is the first step in our effort to show the world the diversity of the Khasi and Garo languages. With this endeavour, we’re also attempting to make a stronger argument to the Centre for the inclusion of the two languages in the Constitution’s Eighth Schedule,” said Tynsong.
He emphasised that the state government has been persistently pursuing constitutional recognition for the two languages with the Centre. “We also have a tonne of documentation to back up and reinforce the significance of including the Khasi language.
