Meghalaya cop gets life imprisonment for raping two sister’s after 9 yrs of suspension;
A special court in Meghalaya’s South West Garo Hills district has sentenced a former police inspector to life in jail for raping two teenage sisters nine years ago.
Nurul Islam was sentenced to life in jail by Special Public Prosecutor Evalarisha Rynjah last week. On Monday, Judge FS Sangma pronounced the punishment sentence.
On March 24, Sangma found the former inspector guilty of rapping the two sisters while he was in charge of the Ampati police station. At the police station, the felon raped one of the two at gunpoint.
The father of the girl’s filed a complaint against the officer in charge at the time, alleging that the inmate threatened to kill them and implicate them in criminal cases. After being charged in the case, the inspector was fired from his job. He eluded police arrest before surrendering to a Shillong court.
Evalarisha Rynjah told this Special Public Prosecutor POCSO Court earlier last week that she had requested for life imprisonment, which is the maximum sentence, as well as a fine.
On March 13 and 14, 2013, Islam raped one of the two sisters, a 14-year-old girl, at the Ampati police station.
He also raped her 17-year-old sister at gunpoint on March 31, the same year, prompting the girls’ fathers to file a FIR against the officer.
