According to reports, a bridge that connects Sunapur village with other villages near the Indo-Bangladesh border, including Huroi, Hingaria, and Borghat in East Jaintia Hills, collapsed due to heavy rainfall on Monday night.
By the collapse of the bridge, Huroi and Hingaria villages have been completely cut off from Sunapur and other villages of the Narpuh area.
The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) in the area has requested the PWD department to fix the bridge and road as soon as possible so that the residents of these isolated villages do not suffer for an extended period of time.
Since last night, vehicular travel along the National Highway (NH) -6 has been hampered due to the occurrence of large landslides at several spots along the crucial highway that connects Barak Valley in Assam with north eastern states such as Tripura and Mizoram.
Thousands of vehicles have been stranded since last night, and commuters are suffering due to a lack of food and water in the area.
The District Authority is continuing working to clear debris in a number of locations, using JCBs and police officers to control traffic.
