Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Northern Border Area filed an FIR on Wednesday for claiming that Bengali, Nepali, and Marathi are the official spoken languages of Meghalaya instead of the indigenous Khasi and Garo languages.
As a result of the misinformation contained in the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT)-approved Social Studies textbook, the KSU Northern Border Area filed a police complaint at Khanapara police station in Ri-Bhoi against Dr Dhananjay Joshi and Neelam Jain.
Bright Star Books International, 521-Vasant Kunj, New Delhi-110070, published the book. On Wednesday, images of the deceptive information page and the front cover of the textbook were extensively disseminated on social media.
The KSU claimed in their FIR that Little Star Senior Secondary School, 9th Mile, Baridua, Ri-Bhoi, was utilising a textbook of Social Studies in Class III that contained incorrect information.
The KSU stated that the information in the textbook indicates that the official languages of Meghalaya are Bengali, Nepali, and Marathi, rather than the local languages Khasi and Garo, and that this misinformation may lead students at the school and other schools in the state to form uninformed opinions about the state.
