The Delhi Police detained Congress leader Rahul Gandhi amid demonstrations against the ED’s summoning of Sonia Gandhi in an accused money laundering case. Other party leaders held included Mallikarjun Kharge, Ranjeet Ranjan, KC Venugopal, Manickam Tagore, Imran Pratapgarhi, and K Suresh, according to ANI. Rahul accused the central government of “dictatorship,” claiming that they were not permitted to hold debates inside Parliament and that protest leaders were imprisoned. “India is a police state, and Modi is a king,” Rahul said to the media.
Sonia Gandhi, the Congress President, went before the Enforcement Directorate on Tuesday for the second round of questioning in a money laundering case involving the National Herald newspaper, leading her party to stage rallies against the alleged abuse of federal agencies. Sonia Gandhi arrived at the federal agency’s central Delhi office about 11 a.m., flanked by Z+ armed protection and her children Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. While Priyanka Gandhi remained in the ED office, Rahul Gandhi promptly left. He was detained by police after leading a protest in Vijay Chowk, close to the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
The questioning and recording of the 75-year-old Congress president’s statement is thought to have started at 11:15 a.m., after the basic formalities, such as summons verification and signing the attendance sheet.
