One more feather added to the cap of Northeast India: Lovlina Borgohain in Tokyo Olympics 2020
Lovlina Borgohain an Indian Boxer from Assam is one more champion from the Northeast to make India proud in the Tokyo Olympics 2020. She brought home the bronze medal after going down fighting in the 69 kg women's welterweight semi-final against Busenaz Surmeneli from Turkey in Tokyo Olympics 2020 by becoming the third Indian boxer to win an Olympic medal.
She became the third Indian boxer after Vijender Singh and Mary Kom to bring a bronze medal for her country.
The Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi spoke to Lovlina and congratulated her on winning a bronze for the country.
PM told her that her accomplishment at the Tokyo Games is a "testimony to the talent and tenacity of our Nari Shakti."
The PM also added that Lovlina's success is a "matter of immense pride for every Indian."
The PM also encouraged the champion to keep up the zeal by tweeting, he wrote, "Well fought @LovlinaBorgohai! Her success in the boxing ring inspires several Indians. Her tenacity and determination are admirable. Congratulations to her on winning the Bronze. Best wishes for her future endeavors. #Tokyo2020
Former Youth and sports minister Kiren Rijiju also took to tweeter to congratulate the northeast gem, "Dear @LovlinaBorgohai, you have made our country proud! Hearty Congratulations on winning the Olympic Bronze medal! We are extremely proud of your achievement!#Cheer4India, he added.
The former cricket player Gautam Gambhir praised the champ by tweeting, You've boxed your way into history #Lovlina! Superb! He ended his note by adding an Indian flag.
Former Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal congratulated the boxer on her achievement and being an inspiration for the youth.
The Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma also took to tweeter to congratulate the daughter of Assam in making the entire nation proud.
Many other politicians and celebrities also took to their respective social media and congratulated the boxer.
The boxer in her maiden appearance at the Olympics had the chance to become the first Indian boxer to reach the final.
However, she lost the first round via a split decision to Turkey's Surmeneli and in the second round, a point was deducted from her total as she received a warning from the in-ring official.
