World leaders hold emergency meeting as ‘Russian-made’ missile kills two in Poland

On Wednesday morning, US Vice President Joe Biden called a "emergency" meeting of the Group of Seven and NATO leaders in Indonesia for discussions after NATO ally Poland said a "Russian-made" missile killed two people in the country's eastern region close to the Ukrainian border.

Uncertainty surrounds the occurrence, which represents the first direct hit on a NATO nation in the conflict's nearly nine-month duration. The missile's launcher and location are unknown, despite the Polish Foreign Ministry's claim that it was "Russian-made."

Russian officials denied any wrongdoing. The missile reportedly hit Przewodow, a village in eastern Poland, around 3:40 PM on Tuesday, about 6 km (3.5 miles) from the Ukrainian border, according to the Polish foreign ministry. Two victims, both men, were reportedly in close proximity to a grain facility's weighing area. Poland's most thorough response thus far was the ministry's statement. Despite having claimed to be looking into the matter, the US and its partners in the West were unable to corroborate a claim that errant Russian missiles had struck the village.

According to Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), members are obligated to engage in collective defence, therefore a Russian attack on Poland might increase the risk of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which started with Moscow's invasion in February. According to two European diplomats, Poland requested the NATO summit as per Article 4 of the treaty so that the allies could consult. Mateusz Morawiecki, the Polish prime minister, claimed that Poland was also improving the readiness of some armed formations.
