Russia has announced that it has blocked Facebook due to “discrimination” in the Russian state media regarding limitations on numerous web sites in relation to Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has stepped up his campaign against media outlets and individuals who do not follow the Kremlin’s stance on the Ukraine conflict, blocking Facebook and Twitter and passing a bill criminalising the deliberate dissemination of what Moscow considers to be “fake” news.
Russia claimed it had blocked Facebook due to “discrimination” against Russian state media outlets, which have been subjected to limitations on a variety of internet platforms as a result of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
“Millions of regular Russians will soon be blocked off from credible information… and silenced from speaking,” warned Nick Clegg, vice president of global affairs at Meta, the parent company of Facebook.
“We will continue to do everything we can to restore our services so that people can express themselves and organize for action in a safe and secure manner,” Clegg added.
