Baghmara, the place of the Garo (A’chik) tribe in Meghalaya, is the headquarters of the South Garo Hills district in the state of Meghalaya in India. Baghmara is surrounded by greenery reserved forests and an exquisite river called the Samsang River the longest river and bridge in all the Garo Hills districts. Bahgmara is also a native place of the first Chief Minister of Meghalaya Captain Williamson Sangma and he always represented the Baghmara constituency.

The word Baghmara was taken from the Bengali language “bagh” means “tiger” and “mara” means “die”. The lore of Baghmara was named after Bong Lasker conquered the tiger by fighting barehand. It is said that a wild Bengal tiger was killed by crushing the jaws.
To remember Bong Lasker, a mausoleum was built in the center of Baghmara town. Once this place was known as “Barokar” which means 12 streams again derived from the Bengali words ‘Baro’ which means twelve and ‘kar’ means streams. No wonder 12 streams might have been called the place’s name. It is obvious that in Baghmara there were a confluence of river or streams in every corner of the region.
