For the first time in its history, the Supreme Court of India Friday live streamed its proceedings. The development came on the day when incumbent Chief Justice NV Ramana is retiring. The proceedings of the bench headed by CJI Ramana were live-streamed starting at 10:30 a.m local time through a government webcast portal.
Earlier a notice has been started by the Supreme court, reads, “Please take notice that on the eve of laying down the office of the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, the proceedings of the Hon’ble Chief Justice’s Court i.e., Ceremonial Bench on August 26, 2022, 10:30 A.M. onwards shall be lives streamed through the NIC webcast portal.”
As per custom, the outgoing Chief Justice of India shares the bench with the next Chief Justice of India on the last working day. The members of the bar express their farewell on the last working day before the ceremonial bench.
Today, CJI Ramana will share the bench with CJI-designate Justice UU Lalit and Justice Hima Kohli.
NV Ramana, the 48th Chief Justice of India, is retiring today, 26 August. On his final day as Chief Justice, NV Ramana is set to deliver judgments in five cases, including the 2007 Gorakhpur riots case and the ban on election freebies. According to the media reports, for the first time in the Supreme Court, the proceedings of the ceremonial bench in the Chief Justice of India NV Ramana’s court will be live-streamed.
