Seven endangered black monkey species rescued by Assam police; two arrested
The Hailakandi area of Assam saw the rescue of at least seven endangered black monkey species.
On Monday, the Hailakandi area of Assam saw the rescue of at least seven endangered black monkey species. They were discovered by the police inside a truck with the licence plate NL 01 AD 4984.
They were discovered as the police were performing their routine duties at the Jamira checkpoint. The vehicle was stopped in Hailakandi while it was travelling to Meghalaya from Mizoram, according to sources.
The forest department received the rescued monkeys. It's estimated that the endangered monkey is worth billions of dollars on the global market. In the meantime, Rakesh Deb Barma, the truck's driver and another person involved , has been taken into custody by the police.
