Supreme Court will hear petitions against the bull-taming sport Jallikattu on November 22.
The Supreme Court announced on Thursday that it will hear a batch of petitions challenging Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra legislation legalising bull-taming sport ‘Jallikattu’ and bullock cart races on November 22. Senior attorney Anand Grover, representing for the petitioners, informed a five-judge Constitution bench led by Justice K M Joseph that the alterations to Jallikattu are illegal.
The panel, which also included Justices Ajay Rastogi, Aniruddha Bose, Hrishikesh Roy, and C T Ravikumar, stated that it will hear the case in November. The Supreme Court had previously stated that the petitions challenging the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Tamil Nadu Amendment) Act, 2017, required to be heard by a larger bench because they raised significant constitutional interpretation issues. The bench presented five questions for the broader bench to decide. The applications, including one filed by the animal rights organisation PETA, have challenged the state statute that permits bull-taming in Tamil Nadu.
