Following violence between people from both states over the construction of a PMGSY road by the frontier state, tensions rose at a disputed point on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border in Dhemaji district of Assam.
Locals from Assam objected to a rural road being built by an Arunachal Pradesh government contractor, officials said, so the contractor fired one round into the air.
The new tension arose barely two days after the two states’ top ministers agreed to conduct a ground-level survey to determine the status of the inter-state boundary in order to resolve the long-running border dispute.
“The two states have issues of contention across 122 villages,” Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated. Otherwise, if there is a discrepancy, we will work it out. This was one of the conclusions we reached during our conversation.”
According to a senior source, the event occurred on Wednesday evening in the Hime Basti area of Assam’s Gogamukh police station.
“Arunachal government development of the road was hampered by local Assamese peasants. “When they went to the construction site to protest, the contractor involved shot one bullet into the air,” he added.
