At the Toronto International Film Festival, Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans,” screened his most anticipated and autobiographical film. The 75-year-old director stated he had been working for this project his entire life. Paul Dano and Michelle Williams portray Spielberg’s parents in “The Fabelmans,” which they co-wrote with Tony Kushner. The movie also heavily references Spielberg’s early years as a filmmaker.
“It’s something obviously I’ve been thinking about for a long time,” Spielberg said on stage after screening the film. “I didn’t really know when I was going to get around to this. It is not because I decided to retire and this is my swan song. Don’t believe any of that,” he said.
Spielberg later added, “This film is for me a way of bringing my mom and dad back. And it also brought my sisters — Annie and Sue and Nancy — closer to me than I ever thought possible. And that was worth making the film for.”
“The Fabelmans” will be released by Universal Pictures on November 11 in New York and Los Angeles before going worldwide on November 23.
Spielberg noted during the film’s introduction that this was his first time ever being included in a film festival’s official schedule. It was Spielberg’s first film to screen at TIFF.
