Dipa Karmakar, a top Indian gymnast from Agartala, Tripura in Northeast India, who stormed the 2016 Rio Olympics by finishing fourth in the vault event, has received a nasty shock from the Federation Internationale de Gymnastique, the world gymnastics body. The international gymnastics body has suspended Karmakar, but the Indian star has no idea why.
“When Dipa learned about her status on the international Gymnastics website, she was taken aback. Dipa is currently residing in Agartala due to her lack of membership in the national camp. She, like the rest of us, is astonished and bewildered. We’re all trying to figure out why she’s been labelled “suspended” by an international federation when the GFI hasn’t said anything. We will inform everyone as soon as we have more information on this scenario.” Stated Nandi her coach.
Dipa was unable to compete in the Tokyo Olympics 2021 due of the COVID-19 epidemic, which caused the qualification competitions to be suspended. Last year at the national camp under Nandi, the gymnast from Agartala was all set to get back to the grind with her compatriots. Up to four gymnasts from Tripura will compete for the first time in the history of gymnastics in India.
