Tripura Police have filed five criminal complaints over fake social media posts.
The Tripura Police Department filed five criminal complaints against 71 persons on Wednesday morning for allegedly publishing “provocative” and “fake” social media messages.
The Tripura Police wrote on its official Facebook page Wednesday, appealing to the public to refrain from disseminating false information and rumors, and warning that anybody attempting to “promote enmity in the society” will face harsh punishment.
“Tripura Police requests to people not to share/like the post without verification because it constitutes to rumor-mongering”. Please do not disseminate false images or information. It is reiterated that the state’s law and order situation is completely regular.”
On October 28, two days after a mosque, a few shops, and a few houses in North Tripura’s Panisagar sub-division were vandalized, the state police clarified that the law and order situation in the state was “normal,” and claimed that certain people were spreading fake news and rumors on Tripura using fake social media handles.
The police stated that the images of a burning mosque in Panisagar that were being circulated were false.
