First Student from Meghalaya Returned from Ukraine; Russia-Ukraine war
Last night, a special aeroplane carrying evacuated Indian students landed in the nation’s capital. The first Meghalayan to return from Ukraine was Ishika Debnath from Laitumkhrah , who was joined by other Indian students.
According to Ishika, her institute was only 37 kilometres from the border, but they were evacuated 3 to 4 kilometres ahead of the border due to heavy traffic. They had to walk 3 to 4 kilometres and spend the night beside a petrol station. They were picked up by some officials from Romania.
She added that coming via another nation was difficult because they did not have visas, but that the Indian embassy had assisted them in getting out of the predicament and returning to India. She thanked the Indian embassy in Ukraine in providing them assistance and help come out of it.
Meghalaya’s Chief Minister is in contact with the federal government on the remaining students’ evacuation. The Centre has assured to assist in the evacuation of all students from the war-torn country.
The Indian government has set up a dedicated Twitter account to help with the Operation Ganga evacuation of Indians from Ukraine.
Approximately 16,000 Indian students remain stuck in Ukraine. Many have made frantic pleas for aid, posting photographs and videos from subterranean bunkers and bomb shelters where they have been hiding from Russian bombs and missiles on social media.
