Two Day Non-Cooperation Movement in Garo Hills Amid Appointment of GHADC CEO; Meghalaya
Following a two-day strike by employees of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), several Garo Hills pressure organizations have called for a two-day Non-Cooperation Movement (NCM) across the region starting Thursday to demand the removal of newly-appointed Chief Executive Officer Rakesh A Sangma.
On each of the two days, the NCM will begin at 5 a.m. and end at 5 p.m. The GSU, FKJGP, ADE, AYWO, FAF, NTDF, TSCF, GGU, NESO, and NGEA have all called for Rakesh Sangma to be removed from his position as CEM.
Employees of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council began a two-day pen-down strike on the 1st of February. Officers and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) aided the employees in their agitation. The GHADC’s office appeared to be vacant. The workforce was protesting against Rakesh Sangma, the newly elected Chief Executive Member, according to the employees. Rakesh Sangma is not a Garo MDC, therefore how can he safeguard the Garo Community identity?
According to the groups, the CEM has mixed ancestry, with his mother hailing from the ‘Agitok’ clan and his father hailing from a non-Garo society. They’ve requested that the CEM be altered, and they’ve said they’ll keep demonstrating until their demands are met.
Because the Garo community is matrilineal, children inherit their mothers’ clan.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the West Garo Hills district administration issued an order under Section 144 CrPC forbidding the gathering of more than five people on the GHADC office grounds at any time. Armed forces, paramilitary forces, and other law enforcement agencies on legitimate duty or deployment would be exempt from the directive.
