Tuesday saw the appointment of Suella Braverman, a member of the Conservative Party who represents Fareham in southeast England, to the position of UK Home Secretary, replacing her fellow Indian-origin colleague Priti Patel.
One of the earliest candidates to put her name forward to succeed Boris Johnson as Tory leader and Prime Minister was the 42-year-old barrister, who up until this point worked as Attorney General in the Boris Johnson-led administration.
Prime Minister Liz Truss, who was just appointed, chose Braverman as her home secretary.
She made reference to her own immigrant experience as the daughter of Goan-origin father Christie Fernandes and Hindu Tamil mother Uma, who immigrated to the UK from Mauritius and Kenya, respectively, in the 1960s.
Braverman stated, “I want to embed the opportunities of Brexit, tidy up the outstanding concerns… and lower taxes.”
“Liz is ready now to be PM. She won’t need to learn on the job. And the job is hard and needs to be done properly. The party has had a difficult six years and stability is urgently and swiftly needed,” Braverman said about the new UK’s Prime Minister.
