On Monday, either Liz Truss, the current foreign secretary, or Rishi Sunak, the previous Indian-origin Chancellor, will be chosen as leader of the ruling Conservative Party, revealing who would succeed Boris Johnson as the next prime minister of the United Kingdom.
The winner’s name will be revealed at 12:30 PM. According to the BBC, the victor of the leadership contest will be officially named by Queen Elizabeth II at (about 5 p.m. IST) and will begin office on Tuesday.
If Truss is elected, she will become the third female prime minister of the UK after Margaret Thatcher (1979–1990) and Theresa May. (2016-2019).
Sunak will become the first person of Indian ancestry to hold the position in the UK if he wins the contest.
According to a BBC story, Truss, who is expected to win, has vowed to reveal more consumer protection measures within a week of taking office.
Despite receiving the highest support from Conservative MPs, Sunak has lagged behind Truss in surveys of the party’s base.
Before the transfer of power takes place on Tuesday, Johnson is scheduled to make a farewell speech.
