The Election Commission will meet today to explore whether the Punjab assembly election can be postponed, as leaders of many political groups have requested, according to sources. The Election Commission is expected to make a ruling on this case about midday, according to sources
In a letter to the Election Commission, Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi proposed that the assembly elections scheduled for February 14 be postponed by at least six days to accommodate Guru Ravidas Jayanti.
Mr. Channi wrote in the letter that leaders of the Scheduled Castes community, which makes up 32% of Punjab’s population, notified him that a big number of people from the community would “visit Banaras in Uttar Pradesh from February 10 to 16” and hence would be unable to vote. Guru Ravidas was born on February 16th, and his birthday is February 16th.
