It’s fascinating to learn about an insect that only appears on the surface of the world every four years. An insect that people look forward to as a four-year-only visitor. With its unique color and taste, an insect that comes as a hope transforms life into a celebration.
This amazing fact comes from Meghalaya, a football-crazed state. The insect, like the FIFA World Cup, occurs every four years in some parts of Meghalaya.
Rural and tribal communities, on the other hand, contain a plethora of such critters that are teeming with life and provide sustenance for humans.
This strange insect can be found only in some parts of Ri Bhoi district of Meghalaya’s villages. Every four years, this beetle appears for one month and then vanishes for the next four years, until the next world cup.
The locals, on the other hand, eat this insect. These tiny creatures, which normally emerge from cicada’s shells or molt, thrive within a minute. These mystery animals can only be spotted in certain regions of Meghalaya’s deep jungle in the Ri-Bhoi district, and they mainly appear at night.
This insect was known as a ‘niangtaser or sangser’ by the natives.
Experts say the insect is called Chremistica and belongs to the Cicada family. Every four years, it emerges from the earth in many villages in the Ri Bhoi area, usually around the FIFA World Cup.
The people have given the winged bug the name Niangtaser (Niang is insect in Khasi) and nicknamed it World Cup Insect. It’s a mystery why the insect comes exactly four years before the FIFA World Cup.
The people have already seen and heard the insects’ whistling melodies this year, not long before the FIFA World Cup. The football-obsessed residents have dubbed the insect Niang World Cup.
In addition, every four years, when the insect arrives, the locals hold a festival. In 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2018, the Niangtaser festival took place.
The FIFA World Cup 2022 will be held in Qatar from November 21 to December 18, 2022. This will be the first World Cup ever held in the Arab world, and the second World Cup to be held exclusively in Asia, following the 2002 tournament in South Korea and Japan. In addition, the tournament will be the last to feature 32 teams, with a 48-team tournament set for the United States, Mexico, and Canada in 2026.
Because of the extreme heat in Qatar during the summer, the World Cup will be held from late November to mid-December, making it the first tournament not to be hosted in May, June, or July
