On Monday, the 35-ward Chandigarh Municipal Corporation election ballots are being counted. By mid-afternoon, the findings should be available.
Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has won six seats in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation election so far, beating out the BJP and the Congress, in results that many believe could be a preview of the Punjab poll early next year. The BJP received four seats, while the Congress received three.
According to the preliminary results, the mayor, BJP candidate Ravi Kant Sharma, has been beaten by AAP candidate Damanpreet Singh. On Friday, Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana’s capital, held elections for 35 new municipal councilors.
AAP, contesting the Chandigarh municipal polls for the first time, has surprised the BJP, which has a majority in the outgoing civic body.
However, ahead of the Punjab election, it was a four-way fight between Punjab’s ruling Congress, AAP, BJP, and the Akali Dal-BSP coalition.
