Akhil Gogoi, the president of the Raijor Dal and a member of the Assam Legislative Assembly from Sibsagar, has appealed to all indigenous organizations in the state to unite and resume the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) struggle in the state without choosing the middle position.
Following the removal of the three farm laws by the federal government, several anti-CAA organizations, including Muslim leaders, staged protests.
Gogoi, who had taken a key part in the anti-CAA movement and had already spent a jail term after being prosecuted in two different cases since December 2019, claimed to be willing to resume the agitation if and when necessary.
“However, I believe that all indigenous organizations in the state must band together and take a firm stance in order to resurrect the anti-CAA movement,” he stated.
The Centre’s recent decision to remove three controversial agriculture legislation in the wake of farmers’ year-long protests has generated calls for the controversial Act to be repealed by a variety of groups, including the influential All Assam Students’ Union.
“The movement against CAA in the state lessened while I was in prison due to a compromise reached by leading indigenous organizations.” They were unable to resist the government’s efforts to stifle the movement and eventually gave in under pressure,” the farmer’s rights activist remarked.
