As Madagascar is one of the poorest countries in the world, it has not yet had time to recover from the economic downturn during the pandemic and natural disasters.
An unexpected demonstration flashes against the persistent power cuts and rising fuel and food prices. The wrath of 81% of the population living below the poverty line is rising crescendo on the island.
Footage shared on social media shows at least hundreds of protesters gathered and burning barricades on the street, police have also seen the scenes controlling the chaos in the city.
This came after the police in Madagascar detained two leading members of the main opposition party last month on July 23, during a protest in the capital against rising living costs and economic hardship. Several hundred anti-government demonstrators gathered in the center of Antananarivo, watched by a heavy military and police presence.
