Assam: 3 arrested in Karimganj for alleged abduction, gangrape of 18-year-old

An 18-year-old girl was allegedly gangraped and abducted by three people in Assam’s Karimganj district.

The event happened on Saturday night, and three of the four accused were later taken into custody while the fourth remained at large, according to the police. Senior Karimganj police officials report that a girl from Nilambazar reported being kidnapped by four males on Saturday night and then being gangraped.

The officer stated, “According to the accusation, the accused led her to a jungle region close to the international boundary between India and Bangladesh and raped her.”

On Saturday night and in the early hours of Sunday, the accused were taken into custody from three different locations.

The complaint made by the girl on Saturday night led to the registration of a case. Both section 376D (gang rape) and section 366 (abducting a woman and forcing her into marriage) of the Indian Penal Code were invoked as grounds for the arrest of the defendants.

Padmanabh Baruah, the district police superintendent for Karimganj, said, “Three people, including the main offender, have been taken into custody. The complainant and others who were arrested underwent the required medical examinations; we are looking into the case.

However, according to some police officers, the girl was in a relationship with one of the arrested people, and the families of the people who were arrested stated she knew the main suspect before the incident.
