A team of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) discovered the body of a circle officer in the Assam district of Dhubri on Sunday after it had been missing since a boat capsized on Thursday, according to the police.
“After sustained efforts by our rescue teams, the body of Circle Officer Sanju Das, who went missing in the recent Dhubri boat disaster, was recovered about 1000 metres downstream from the accident location,” Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma posted on Twitter on Sunday afternoon.
According to Dhubri’s SP Gaurav Abhijit Dilip, on September 29 near Bhashanir, a mechanised country boat carrying 28 people, including the circle officer, capsized after colliding with a bridge post.
“With the exception of the circle officer, all 27 passengers were located within a day. The dead body was discovered by the SDRF team this morning at about 10:45 am, one kilometre from the spot where the boat capsized on September 29.
According to the SP, the passengers who were saved stated that the boat lost control before hitting a structure. The SDRF crew then started a search operation.
After the legalities are through, the deceased body, according to him, will be flown from Dhubri to the Cachar district. However, Rohan Kumar Jha, the deputy commissioner of the Cachar district, stated that they are thinking about transporting the body by road.
Subir Das, the younger brother of Sanju Das, and other family members have travelled to Dhubri to pick up the body, which has been transported there for the postmortem procedure, according to the police.
Circle officer Sanju Das, according to those with knowledge of the situation, was on his way home from an inspection. Sanju Das and his colleagues said that an engineer working for L&T Company barred them from navigating the bridge, forcing Sanju to take a boat.
He refused to use a boat to cross the river, but he was told to wait until after dark if he wants to use the bridge. Later, he made the decision to board the boat, which led to his demise, a government official stated without revealing his identity.
Badruddin Ajmal, a member of the Lok Sabha from Dhubri, sought a high-level investigation. The MP and perfume tycoon declared an ex-gratia of 10 lakh rupees to Das’ surviving family members.
