Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, has suspended three top police officers in the Darrang district, including the superintendent of police (SP), on suspicion of failing to perform their duties in connection with the unnatural death of a youngster.
Additionally, according to a published statement, he mandated the creation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the matter.
A 13-year-old girl who purportedly worked as a domestic helper was reportedly discovered hanging inside a home in the Dhula neighbourhood of the Darrang district in June.
The girl’s employer’s spouse was later detained by the Dhula police, but the girl’s family claims the authorities were unwilling to conduct a thorough investigation.
Sarma inquired about the accusations made by the girl’s family against the police when he went to the girl’s home in the Dhekiajuli neighbourhood of Sonitpur district on Friday.
It has been claimed that the police showed significant negligence in gathering photographic and videographic proof of the incident.
The officer in charge of the Dhula Police Station is also accused of exerting pressure on the deceased’s family members to refrain from filing a written complaint about the unnatural death, according to the release stated.
The concerned officials received instructions from the CM to use a government programme to build a house for the deceased person’s family.
He gave instructions to the deputy commissioner of Sonitpur to take action so that the deceased’s family may be included in the Orunodoi programme, which pays recipients Rs 1,000 per month into their bank accounts.
