The Assam flood crisis is becoming worse over time as twelve more persons lost their lives on Wednesday in floods and landslides in the state after relentless rain quickly turned around the previously improving condition.
On average, two people per district in Cachar and Chirang and one person per district in Barpeta, Biswanath, Darrang, Dhemaji, Golaghat, Lakhimpur, and Nagaon died in floods of the 12. Guwahati has received news of the landslide casualty.
According to reports, a landslide happened on Wednesday in the Bhabanipur neighbourhood of Noonmati Guwahati, and claimed the life of one individual.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reports that the affected population on Wednesday increased from over 25 lakh just 12 hours ago to over 31 lakh. Meanwhile, the inmates in relief camps increased from 1.76 lakh to 3.12 lakh.
The Brahmaputra river monitoring stations at Neematighat in the Jorhat district, Tezpur, and Dhubri have all been identified as having “serious” flood status by the Central Water Commission. The Kopili, Beki, and Barak rivers in Dharamtul, Silchar, and Karimganj have all been designated as having “serious” flood status. “Above normal” flood warnings have been issued for the Brahmaputra and a number of its tributaries in other locations. According to the CWC’s flood report, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh have seen unusually severe rains over the past two days.
