According to an internal estimate by the state health department’s top authorities, the third wave of Covid is predicted to peak in Assam in the last week of January.
While daily instances in the state surpassed 6,000 on Monday, sources in the state health department indicated that, based on the assessment, daily cases of 12,000 to 15,000 could be reported during the peak this time in the state. “The increase of Covid cases is already abnormally significant, and it is expected to grow. “At the same time, densely populated regions in upper, northern, and southern Assam remain equally vulnerable,” the source said.
According to local health experts, the rising trend of Covid cases indicates that Assam is on the verge of a third wave, which may not last long. “In Assam, the downward trend should begin in February,” the source noted.
Over 6,000 cases were reported daily in the state during the peak of the second wave in May-end last year. The highest 92 deaths were reported twice on May 17 and May 25 as the second wave reached its climax. Even while such a high number of deaths is improbable due to the disease’s milder severity this time, health officials predict that the total number of cases will shortly double. “The rate of positivity will continue to rise beyond 10%,” an official said.
