Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the opposition in the West Bengal assembly, and MP Locket Chatterjee were detained by the Kolkata Police on Tuesday while attempting to visit Santragachi during the BJP’s large-scale protest march to the state secretariat “Nabanna” over alleged corruption by the Trinamool Congress government. During the protest, Sukanta Majumdar, the state BJP chair, was also detained by the police.
On the approach to the Second Hooghly Bridge, in front of the police training school, next to the secretariat, they were halted.
To participate in the saffron party’s “Nabanna Abhijan,” thousands of BJP supporters from throughout the state began to arrive in Kolkata and the nearby Howrah on Tuesday morning.
While spearheading the Nabanna Cholo Abhiyan, the BJP leaders were taken into custody in Hastings, Kolkata. Adhikari, Chatterjee, and BJP leader Rahul Sinha were brought to the Lalbazar headquarters of the Kolkata Police.
In preparation for the BJP march, the Kolkata Police have heavily barricaded Hastings in the vicinity of the state government’s new Secretariat.
As the demonstrators fought with the security personnel close to the Howrah bridge, the police were forced to use tear gas and water cannons to break them up.
