Lee Jung-jae, Star Of The Squid Game, Creates History After Receiving Emmy Award

With South Korean actor Lee Jung-jae receiving outstanding lead actor in a drama series and director Hwang Dong-hyuk winning best director, Netflix’s “Squid Game” stole the show at the 2022 Emmy Awards.

The most watched show in Netflix history, Squid Game, is set in Seoul and tells the tale of hundreds of players who play dangerous kid’s games to earn cash prizes.

Lee took on Seong Gi-hun who eventually emerged victorious. When Squid Game debuted on Netflix in September of last year, it instantly became a craze in popular culture. It was the first non-English language programme to receive an Emmy nomination for outstanding drama series.

Squid Game received 14 nominations for the awards this year. By becoming the first South Korean actor to triumph in the category of outstanding lead actor, Lee has achieved history.

Following the presentation of his trophy, Lee commended filmmaker Hwang for “creatively bringing a realistic subject we all confront to the screen with a fantastic script and amazing images.”

“I want to thank the TV Academy for this honor and also a huge thank-you to Netflix,” he said on the stage.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol also congratulated Hwang and Lee. “Actor Lee Jung-jae’s outstanding acting has brought the character and the viewers’ hearts together,” Yoon wrote on his Facebook page.
