Contacts of Covid patients need no testing unless at risk or comorbidities; ICMR

In an advise, the Indian Council of Medical Research stated that the contacts of Covid-19 patients do not need to be tested unless they are recognized as high risk due to age or comorbidities. It has been stated that everyone who comes into touch with Covid -19 positive people does not require testing unless it is a high-risk interaction or persons with various other conditions.

The top government authority said in a new set of guidelines on coronavirus illness testing that at-risk contacts of patients would be those over 60 years old and those with co-morbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, chronic lung or renal disease, cancer, and obesity.

According to the ICMR’s Advisory on Purposive Testing Strategy for Covid-19, tests can be done at the discretion of the treating clinician if specific conditions are met.

Asymptomatic patients having surgical or non-surgical invasive procedures, such as pregnant women or near labor who are admitted to the hospital for delivery, should not be evaluated unless symptoms arise.
