Dalit leader from Gujarat arrested by Assam Police, deported to Guwahati

Jignesh Mevani, a Dalit politician from Gujarat, was arrested in Assam on Wednesday, according to his team’s social media posts. Mevani was detained and transported to Ahmedabad last night, according to a post on Instagram. He’ll then fly to Guwahati.

Mevani, an independent MLA from Vadagam and a vocal critic of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was arrested at around 11:30 p.m., according to an Instagram post. The reason for this is unclear at this time.

“We have yet to receive a copy of the FIR from the police. We have been told of some cases brought against him in Assam, at least on the surface “On Instagram, his team stated.

After the leader’s arrest, his supporters were urged to unite against “the horrible act” perpetrated against him. His team stated, “Jignesh Mveani has always advocated for the rights of the poor.”

“Assam police have arrested Vadgam MLA Jignesh Mevani from the Palanpur Circuit House. We have been informed of some complaint brought against him in Assam and is likely to be deported to Assam tonight,” Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar tweeted.
