India has urged safe and uninterrupted passage for all innocent civilians and its citizens from Ukraine, T. S. Tirumurti said during a UN Security Council emergency meeting on the humanitarian catastrophe created by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. “We are gravely concerned that, despite our repeated appeals to both sides, a safe passage for our stranded Sumy students has not materialised,” he stated.
“It is critical that humanitarian intervention be guided by the principles of neutrality, impartiality, and independence,” the envoy told the UN Security Council.
“We were able to facilitate the safe repatriation of nearly 20,000 Indians from Ukraine,” the envoy said, adding that India has assisted residents from other nations in fleeing the war-torn country.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the other hand, talked to the leaders of Ukraine and Russia yesterday to reaffirm India’s support for an early ceasefire and for all sides to return to the road of negotiation and diplomacy.
Throughout his discussions with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, Modi asked for their help in rescuing hundreds of Indians stranded in the eastern Ukrainian city of Sumy amid fierce fighting.
