Dolphins are known for their friendly and playful nature. There are currently 42 species of dolphins and seven species of porpoises. They are marine mammals and they gave birth likely other mammals, female dolphins’ pregnancy last between nine and 16 months.
Calves are born in the water. Deliveries are usually tail-first, but head-first deliveries are also seen. The umbilical cord snaps during delivery.
This video is from Dolphin Quest Hawaii, located at the Hilton Waikoloa Village, on September 17, 2012, at a time 12-year-old Keo gave birth to a calf and that calf was the first second-generation calf to be born at Dolphin Quest Hawaii that time. In the video, Dolphin Quest trainers were in the water during the dolphin birth to observe and comfort the new dolphin mom.
Calves are approximately 111 to 116.3 I’m (43.7 to 45.7 in.) long and weigh about 10 to 20 kg (22 to 44 lbs.). In the first few days after birth, the calf’s dorsal fin and tail flukes are pliable and lack firmness, but gradually stiffen.
Dolphins are extraordinarily intelligent animals who also display culture, something which was long believed to be unique to humans (although now recognised in various species). Dolphins have been observed teaching young how to use tools. They cover their snouts with sponges to protect them while foraging.
