Droupadi Murmu, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) presidential candidate, was elected as India’s 15th President on Thursday after defeating opposition presidential candidate Yashwant Sinha.
Folk performers staged a tribal dance in Delhi to celebrate Murmu’s victory over Sinha. Murmu is the first tribal woman to become the President of India and as such needs no introduction, but her road has been difficult, and she has experienced a number of hurdles.
Murmu became the first leader born after independence to hold this position, as well as the country’s first tribal and youngest president. Due to the absence of an assembly in Jammu & Kashmir, the value of MP votes has lowered from 708 to 700 this time. At the same time, the value of MLA votes varies per state. The majority figure for any candidate’s victory in the presidential election is 5,43,216. The NDA claims to have received 5,33,751 votes. At the same time, the opposition has 3,60,362 votes.
The President-elect will take oath on July 25, a day after Ramnath Kovind’s tenure ends.
