India's Education Rankings: Kerala Is Number One And Meghalaya Is The Bottom Of The List

The most recent Performance Grade Index (2020–21) of the Union Ministry of Education shows a slight improvement for Meghalaya. Meghalaya, which was last year's lowest-ranked state, is currently ranked second-lowest among all states and Union Territories.
Arunachal Pradesh has performed the lowest this year, while Kerala, Maharashtra, and Punjab have performed the best on the PGI, which evaluates school education at the district level.

The lowest level in the index, L7, was reached by Arunachal Pradesh with 669 points, while Manipur, Nagaland, and Uttarakhand joined Meghalaya at L6 level with scores between 701 and 750 points.

Meghalaya increased its score from 649 to 716 points over the previous year. Meghalaya performed worse than Assam (848 points), Tripura (834), Mizoram (765), Sikkim (751), Manipur (741) and Nagaland (728).
Ladakh's performance saw the largest improvement. The union territory increased from its lowest score of 545 points in 2019–20 to a level 4 ranking with 844 points. The amount of improvement in a single year is the largest ever.

No state or territory received the highest grade (L1). Other states that have advanced to the L2 level include Kerala, Maharashtra, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat, all of which received scores between 901 and 950. The top three states, with 928 points each, are Kerala, Punjab, and Maharashtra.
