“The Voice of Mawlai People” (Ka Sur U Nong Mawlai ) on Wednesday burnt the effigies of the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong, Home Minister, Lahkmen Rymbui, DGP, R. Chandranathan, SP East Jaintia Hills, Jagpal Dhanoa and SP (Traffic), Shailendra Bamaniya at Mawlai petrol pump on Wednesday evening.
This protest was organized in condemnation against the failure of the state government to comply with the seven-day deadline issued by Mawlai-based organizations to suspend the police officials involved in the ‘encounter killing’ of former HNLC leader Cheristerfield Thangkhiew on August 13 last. The deadline ended yesterday.

On August 18th the Organisations had also met CM Conrad Sangma and demanded the suspension of the Police officials involved in the encounter of Thangkiew.
Following which the chief minister announced that a judicial inquiry would be set up and would be headed by the chairperson of Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) Justice T Vaiphei. Sangma had also informed that after the judicial report is out action with be taken accordingly as per law.
However, the members of the various organizations who gathered at the Mawlai junction also shouted slogans like “Justice for Thangkhiew”, “Meghalaya Police Murderer” and “MDA Government Down Down”.
Condemning the encounter of the former HNLC leader and demanding immediate suspension of the cops involved Hynniewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) Mawlai Circle president Donboklang Kharlyngdoh said “They entered the house of a sick person and killed him. Meghalaya police are witchcraft practitioners and are killers. The government has sent some black sheep to break us but yet we have all remained united for the demand of justice for Cherishterfield Thangkhiew,”
The “Ka Sur U Nong Mawlai” has announced to organize a signature campaign as well as a candlelight vigil on Friday to pressurize the government to suspend the DGP and the two senior police officials.
They have also threatened to intensify their agitations if the government remains indifferent to their demands.
