Elon Musk one of the richest men on earth can easily afford any lavish home he wants. Instead, the multibillionaire is living in a $50,000 tiny home in Boca Chica, Texas, where his SpaceX headquarters are located.
However, the Space X CEO owns only one home which is his Bay Area event house, his prefab house in Boca Chic which is more amazing and interesting.
Being one of the richest men on earth who can afford any lavish mansion but chooses to live in such a tiny home is astonishing.
“My primary home is literally a ~$50k house in Boca Chica / Starbase that I rent from SpaceX. It’s kinda awesome though,” he wrote. Now, a recent report by fan blog Teslarati and the New York Post reveals that said house is a foldable, prefabricated homemade by Boxabl, a housing startup company.
The “Boxable Casita” that the Tesla CEO reportedly lives in is a transportable 20×20 unit that’s only about 375 square feet. It is set up like a studio apartment and features a fully equipped kitchen, bathroom, living room, and bedroom.
Everything is constructed using steel, concrete, foam insulation, and laminated paneling instead of the classic “lumber, hammer, and nails” construction method. This makes it strong enough to withstand hurricane winds, mold-resistant, and flood and snow tolerant.
Almost all of Casita’s finishes — such as electrical, plumbing, and HVAC — are completed in the factory before it’s shipped so when it arrives at its destination, the home only needs to be unfolded and attached to its foundation and utilities.
The 50-year-old mogul’s move comes more than a year after he announced in a tweet that he was “selling almost all physical possessions” and “will own no house.” Musk has since fulfilled that promise, selling most of the properties in his real estate portfolio. Most recently, in June, he listed his final pad, located in San Francisco, for $37.5 million. The home “just needs to go to a large family who will live there,” he tweeted, confirming the news. “It’s a special place.”
The company that created such amazing houses has a waitlist of close to 50,000 people who have displayed interest in over 100,000 units of the prefab house.
Despite its popularity and long waitlist, the company has built only three tiny homes so far.
“The target audience heard about this beforehand, and then the Musk press brought in general audience interest, maybe someone who didn’t care about housing,” the founder of Boxable Galiano Tiramani said.
